Villarreal defensive stalwart Joan Capdevilla believes he still has a lot to achieve at the high-flying Primera Liga outfit.

With Villarreal currently occupying second spot in the Primera Liga standings, many observers are predicting that they will be there or thereabouts when it comes to Spanish domestic glory this season.

Their fine form on the domestic front is coupled with a highly creditable start to the on-going Champions League campaign.

Not surprisingly, Capdevilla is optimistic about the future.

"I am proud but there is still a lot for me to achieve," said the talented left-back.

"When I look at what I have done I am surprised by what I have been through and everything that I have enjoyed in football. I am also conscious of the difficulty of playing at the top level for so many seasons."

"Right now I am feeling ambitious because I believe that Villarreal can do things and as I have said my ambition is to win something here.

"I am very pleased to have settled in at this club because now I can play regularly in a side with many aspirations," he declared.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola insists his team can recover from their current slump and push on to claim the title.

Just a fortnight ago the Catalan giants seemed certain to claim their first title in three years as they enjoyed a 12-point gap at the top of the table following a run of 10 successive victories.

However, a draw against Real Betis followed by back-to-back defeats against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid has cut Barca's lead over Real Madrid to just four points and thrown the title race wide open.

"We will get back up, sort ourselves out and push onwards and upwards," Guardiola said.

"We have been beaten in a very emotional game and I must congratulate Atletico.

"We will continue moving forwards. We were on a good run, but we have dropped quite a few points.

"We had an advantage and Real Madrid have made up eight points on us in three games three months from the end of the competition, but we will get back up and continue.

"We have to refocus. Nobody said this would be easy. League campaigns are long, with bumps, but we are still in a good position."

Atletico did arch-rivals Real Madrid a huge favour after claiming a stunning comeback victory over Barca last night at the Vicente Calderon.

The hosts fought back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 before Sergio Aguero pounced in the 89th minute to earn the Rojiblancos an unlikely 4-3 victory and leave Barca looking nervously over their shoulders in the standings.

Barca captain Carles Puyol has urged his team-mates not to lose their belief in themselves.

"We all feel it because it is a result that hurts," he said. "It's a huge blow but we have to continue and be stronger than ever before.

"Football is like this and you have runs like these but we are working well and we can't lose our belief in ourselves. The team that is top in the table is us."

Team-mate Thierry Henry, who scored Barca's first and third goals last night, believes they have to put the game behind them if they are to get back to winning ways, especially with the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Mallorca on Wednesday.

"We have to forget the game and focus on the cup and getting back to winning in the league," he said. "Tomorrow is another day.

"Now we have to win at Mallorca and get to the Copa del Rey final and then beat Athletic Bilbao (next weekend in the league).

"I don't think the problem is that we are tired. It's not because of our fitness.

"When you lose a game you don't like anything. We're not in good form, but tomorrow will be another day."

Heres a look at the weekends biggest Premier League fixtures and the best bets to place this weekend.
Manchester United v Liverpool
All eyes will be on Old Trafford this weekend when arch rivals Man United and Liverpool face off in what promises to be a fiery encounter (12.45pm O, Live on Sky Sports 2), and the home side are fancied at 1.91 with?Paddy Power to come out on top

The game sees Patrice Evra come face to face with Luis Suarez for the first time since the Liverpool striker was banned for eight games after racially abusing the United defender and the atmosphere will be even more hostile than usual.

The good news as far as United are concerned team wise is that Tom Cleverley looks set to be involved after three months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

The stats are also good as far as this fixture is concerned for Sir Alex Fergusons side as they have won six of the last seven meetings between the two sides on their own patch.

They have also lost just two of their last 15 games in the PL, and were arguably unlucky not to beat Chelsea after coming back from 3-0 down to share the spoils at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Wayne Rooney was outstanding in that game and is due a goal against the Merseysiders, however the value as far as i am concerned in the first scorer market is definitely Hernandez.

Sir Alex admitted after the Chelsea game that he had made a mistake in not giving him a start, as he looked real threat when coming on with his pace and runs causing all sorts of trouble for the Chelsea defence.

I dont think he will make the same mistake again, and the young Mexican will sure play from the off especially as he has also scored in the final 10 minutes of the last two Premier League games between the two sides.

He is a 6.5 shot with?Paddy Power to net the opener and 2.7 with the same firm to score anytime. Both look worth a punt.

I fancy United to win this 2-1 or 3-1. The former is an 8.5 chance with?bet365, while the latter is a 15 shot with?Betfred and?Boylesports.
Sunderland v Arsenal
Arsenal look cracking value at 2.15 with?Paddy Power to take advantage of a weary Sunderland and bag all three points at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

The Black Cats have collected 22 from a possible 30 points since the arrival of Martin ONeill but come into this having played 120 minutes in their midweek FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough.

ONeill will be forced to field a similar team due to the fact that he has a number of key injuries, and the Wearsiders will find Arsenals attack very hard to contain if they play anything like they did in their 7-1 thrashing of Blackburn at the Emirates last weekend.

When the two sides met at the Emirates Stadium, Robin van Persie scored Arsenals fastest-ever Premier League goal (29 seconds) and went on to notch another in a 2-1 win.

The Dutchman has scored 28 goals in 30 games for Arsenal in all competitions, and his goal tally currently stands at 40 goals in his last 41 Premier League appearances.

He is a 4.5 shot with?Betfred and?Boylesports to break the deadlock, and that makes plenty of appeal as does the 1.91 with?bet365 andBetfred for him to score during the 90 minutes.

Make no mistake Sunderland will be no pushover, but Arsenal come into this by far the fresher team and have the class to make it tell.

For those that like to play the correct score market, I think a 2-1 win for the Gunners is worth a small interest at 9 with?Betfred.
Bolton v Wigan
The Reebok Stadium plays host to a crunch Lancashire derby as relegation battlers Bolton face Premier League whipping boys Wigan, and its the visitors who are fancied to come out on top at 2.75 with bet365 and?Betfred.

Both sides are desperate for points in the race for survival, but the situation is particularly bleak for the Latics who currently lie five points off safety in rock bottom with by far the worst goal difference in the top flight.

However, Roberto Martinezs side have shown signs of promise in their last two games causing Spurs plenty of problems at White Hart Lane when they could easily have nabbed a pint in a game which eventually saw them get beat 3-1.

They then did well to grind out hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Everton in difficult conditions, where they came within? seven minutes of a much needed win.

Boltons season seemed to be picking up when they notched recent wins over Everton and Liverpool, but they looked back to their poorest when? getting beat 2-0 by Norwich last time out.

So given that The Trotters have lost eight home games in the league this season, Owen Coyles men looks worth a punt at the odds on offer given that they will go for the jugular from the first whistle in a game which they simply must win at all costs.
Everton v Chelsea
Chelsea will need to be much more clinical if they are to beat Everton at Goodison this weekend, but at 2.6 with?Paddy Power they look worth a bet to do just that.

They threw away a 3-0 lead against Man United last weekend, and I cant help thinking that the tactics employed when they had the game in the bag left alot to be desired.

Any side that is gifted a 3-0 lead in such a game needs to know how to shut up shop and get the job done, and why AVB didnt get his side to do so is a mystery.

As far as the stats are concerned Chelsea have won only two of the last 10 Premier League meetings with Everton, drawing six of the remaining eight encounters.

However overall, Everton have won just two of the last 22 PL games against the Londoners albeit that they came in the last two meetings at Goodison Park.

So if Chelsea can keep things tight and attack like they are capable of then a win is surely on the cards given that David Moyes side have managed to win just one of their last six games in the league.

Daniel Sturridge has continued to impress in recent weeks and is likely to prove a real handful for the Toffees defence.

The youngster is a 7 shot with?Paddy Power to net the opener and appeals as the player most likely to break the deadlock from a punting perspective.

He can also be backed at 3 with the same to score anytime during the 90 minutes and that looks a big price given that he is as short as 2.2 in a place.

Cristiano Ronaldo finally stood up to be counted in a Clasico as record-breaking Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 on Saturday.

The debate over who is better out of Ronaldo or Barca counterpart Lionel Messi has raged for some time now, but unlike the former, the latter has always been able to call on an impeccable record in this fixture.

On Saturday night, though, Ronaldo stepped up, scoring a 73rd-minute winner that puts Jose Mourinho's men seven points clear of their old foes at the top of the table with four games remaining.

He struck just two minutes after Alexis Sanchez had bundled in an equaliser to cancel out Sami Khedira's equally scrappy first-half opener - a goal that set a new record for goals in a league season.

It was the Portugal forward's standout contribution on a night when Madrid, humiliated 5-1 on this ground last season, strangled their normally free-passing hosts.

Messi was barely allowed a kick and his playmaking team-mates - Xavi and Andres Iniesta - were largely stifled by a Madrid side fully aware of the rewards on offer.

Mourinho shaved his head at the start of the week to signal he was ready to "go to war", but the game never really ignited to such levels.

There were chances - Barca rookie Cristian Tello wasting a number of them - but the gameplan laid out by the Portuguese coach was clearly to drain the life out of the home side.

It worked a treat and, at times, allowed his men to look like the passing team.

They started well, with Ronaldo's fourth-minute header forcing Victor Valdes into a full-stretch save and Karim Benzema cutting in from the right and drilling in an effort that the keeper dealt with.

Madrid were enjoying making full use of the Nou Camp's wide pitch and, when Ronaldo burned past Sergio Busquets on the left, the midfielder hauled him down and picked up the game's first booking.

That was indicative of the early promise Real had shown and, with 17 minutes on the clock, they took the lead with their 108th goal of the campaign.

Mesut Ozil's corner found Pepe at the back post and his header was parried by Valdes but, as Carles Puyol struggled to get his legs free to clear, Khedira wrapped his foot around the loose ball to score from two yards.

Replays suggested the ball may have clipped Pepe's arm as he nodded down, but any decision to rule out the strike would have been harsh.

The goal was met with near silence, much like when Xavi missed a wonderful chance to equalise 10 minutes later.

Messi's slide-rule pass put him clear on Iker Casillas' goal, but he could only hit across and wide, rather than under the keeper as was expected.

Swamped whenever they had the ball, Barca resorted to shooting from distance through Thiago, while at the other end Ozil's pace got him clear, with Javier Mascherano's brilliant block halting his run.

Whether directed at half-time by Mourinho or not, Real returned for the second half with the intention of slowing the game down, with a number of players including Pepe and Fabio Coentrao both requiring treatment for what appeared to be innocuous injuries.

Their tactics were frustrating Barcelona, though, who could barely get close to Casillas' goal and, when they did, Tello twice hit wildly over - the second occasion a horrendous spoon that cleared the bar.

But Tello was persistent, and in the 70th minute, he helped Barcelona get level.

The goal had an element of pinball about it, with Casillas denying Tello and Sanchez in quick succession - the second save a wonderful claw-back - before the Chilean eventually bundled in from close range.

But, rather than implode as they have done so often in this fixture over recent years, Real responded with class.

Ozil's ball set Ronaldo racing down the right and past Mascherano, although his 54th goal of the season was made easier by Valdes' decision to race off his line.

Clearly stunned, Barca offered no response of note and it was Real who finished the stronger, with Ronaldo inches away from adding a crowning third in stoppage time.

New Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has already identified several new faces he would like to bring to Villa Park, but is adamant that Norwich striker Grant Holt is not one of them.

Striker Holt was an integral part of Lambert's hugely successful three-year spell at Carrow Road, but the 31-year-old has been left disappointed by the club's refusal to offer him a new three-year contract and had a transfer request turned down last month.

But, while Lambert was fulsome in his praise for the centre-forward, he insisted he has not thought about signing Holt, and said: "I haven't even thought about that at all. Grant Holt was brilliant for me. In the three years I was there (at Norwich) he was a huge part of what happened at the club. He is a terrific guy and I have a lot of time for him."

Copyright (c) PA Sport 2012, All Rights Reserved.
